Acclaimed Artist Reveals New Collection in Brum

Birmingham publishers Washington Green Fine Art launch original works from Lawrence Coulson – the company’s longest serving artist

‘Through All Seasons’ reflects beauty of natural world in landscape paintings.

A never before seen collection of original artwork featuring idyllic landscapes is set to be unveiled in Birmingham this month.

The exclusive collection, ‘Through All Seasons’, by acclaimed British painter Lawrence Coulson will launch at Castle Fine Art in the International Convention Centre on Saturday 18th July.

Lawrence Coulson_Through All Seasons 2015_A Slower PaceCoulson, who – having joined Birmingham based art publishers Washington Green in 1999 – is now the company’s longest serving artist, and will be presenting the collection on the day between 12-4pm and talking to guests about the inspiration behind his work.

His most recent body of paintings, ‘Through All Seasons’, takes the viewer on a tour of the British landscape, both urban and rural. Featuring iconic city skylines, such as the Millennium Dome, to enchanting countryside scenes and calming coastal settings, each piece evokes a surreal sense of serenity and atmosphere through the use of vibrant blues, ethereal purples and warm oranges. Each piece captures a moment in time, immersing the viewer in a sense of space and timelessness.

Speaking of his new collection, Coulson says:

“My landscape paintings focus on the atmosphere of particular locations rather than the geographical characteristics. I am interested in what they make the viewer feel and what they can draw out of the painting. Collectors in the past have employed wonderful phrases to describe the work, ranging from ‘escapist’, ‘romantic’ and ‘melancholy’ – all of which pretty much grasp what I am trying to achieve.”

Coulson, who only started painting as a hobby at 21 – and achieved a D in art at O level – is best known for his oil paintings which bring to life dramatic open spaces and alluring skylines. ‘Through All Seasons’ features notably more manmade structures and human activity than Coulson’s previous collections.  Taking particular influence from his local landscape near the Cambridgeshire Fens, he also names 19th century Romantic painters J.M.W Turner and John Constable, along with his father, celebrated artist Gerald Coulson, as guiding influences.

Beth McCarthy, Birmingham ICC’s Gallery Manager for Castle Galleries – Washington Green Fine Art’s nationwide network of high street galleries – said:

“Throughout his successful career, we’ve seen Lawrence diversify in subject matter whilst retaining the technique and flair that has earned him critical acclaim. Starting first by applying his base paint with a large brush, he then uses his fingertips to blend and push colour into the canvas. This physical interaction with his work is a Coulson trademark, with the lightness of touch and delicacy of the merging colours enhancing the finish.”

Lawrence Coulson’s ‘Through All Seasons’ collection of original oil paintings will be available to view at Castle Fine Art, ICC, Broad Street, B1 2EA, from Saturday 18th July until Sunday 2nd August.
