Regency Wharf is now the home of a dedicated outdoor event space: Rum Runner Yard, named in homage to the famous Rum Runner Club, formerly located on the site.

Landlord Picton have partnered with event consultants Tek Studio to host a series of events between now and the end of 2016.

Regency Wharf occupies a prime location adjacent to the Hyatt hotel and the historic Gas Street Basin, and in close proximity to the ICC and Library of Birmingham. Rum Runner yard can be accessed from Broad street by the Hyatts ‘The Gentleman & Scholar Pubwhich is across the street from the ICC and the Library of Birmingham. Also between Soloman Cutler (Wetherspoons) and Walkabout and from the Canal side/Gas Street Basin.

The estate has continued to evolve under Picton’s ownership, with both Karaoke Box and Rub Smokehouse opening units there in recent years, and the launch of a dedicated outdoor entertainment space has been a logical progression given the rise of “pop-up” entertainment and street food culture. Modifications have been made to the yard space, Picton have appointed highly respected architects/designers GENSLER to help create an even more dynamic and creative event venue, so we can continue to enhance the built environment to ensure it can be utilised by any number of different operators, and Picton are keen to work with local, as well as national, operations to continue the estate’s Celebration of Birmingham”. With a focus on Birmingham’s heritage.

“We are ecstatic that we are kicking off the event programme by hosting a collaboration between some incredible Birmingham operators Flatpack and Original Patty Men. Under the guidance of Flatpack, Regency Wharf’s Rum Runner Yard will be transformed into an outdoor cinema, hosting 2 evenings of films and one day of Birminghams childrens TV classics.” Juliet Carmen Teksnes, Tek Studio.

(MORE DETAILS TO FOLLOW)

Ian Francis, Flatpack Film Festival – ”Birmingham on Film is all about taking rare archive film to unusual locations, so we’re delighted to be working with Regency Wharf. It pops up in a number of our films: back when it was the Rumrunner this corner of the city was the backdrop for cult TV show Gangsters, and just across the water Cliff moored his narrowboat for Take Me High. I hope this is the first of many outdoor screenings at RW – Rum Runner Yard.”

Wesley Meyer, Gensler – “Our goal was to help articulate the client’s vision for Regency Wharf. The site is really unique, a mash-up of industrial heritage and pop culture. It’s the sort of thing that could only happen in Birmingham. We wanted a solution that understood this context but was also relevant to the community today. The future vision builds on all this to make something new and something we see will be an icon of Broad St and Birmingham at large.”

Laurence Jones, Picton (Regency Wharf Landlords) – “Regency Wharf has seen a number of changes in recent years, including high profile lettings to Karaoke Box and Rub Smokehouse.  The estate is continuing to evolve, with the ultimate aspiration being to establish it as one of Birmingham’s key leisure destinations.  The next step in that journey is the creation of “Rum Runner Yard”, a dedicated event space at the heart of the estate.  Tek Studio will be organising the initial run of events and, thereafter, we hope the space can be utilised to incorporate any number of other attractions, from outdoor cinema screenings to live music and street food.  In addition, our highly regarded design teams, including Gensler and Graffiti Life, continue to help us develop a visual language for the estate which will pay homage to the cultural heritage of Birmingham.  The city itself is undergoing a significant transformation which very much ties in with the progressive nature of our work at Regency Wharf”
