According to the Anxiety & Depression Association of America, anxiety affects more than 18% of the US population each year. Anxiety is therefore the most common mental illness in the US. I myself suffer from this debilitating condition from time to time, so I understand how important it is to look for effective ways of handling the symptoms of anxiety.
CBD oil, as the name suggests, contains CBD or cannabidiol. It has become one of the most popular alternative forms of self-treatment for people who suffer from anxiety. In a survey published in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research in 2018, about 62% of people who use cannabidiol report that they use CBD to treat a medical condition, with the top 3 conditions being anxiety, pain, and depression, however, there remains confusion on its benefits.
So, does CBD really work? Well, I tried it for two weeks, and here’s what happened.
What is CBD Oil?
Before I talk about how CBD oil affected my anxiety, allow me to tell you a little bit more about CBD oil first.
CBD comes from the hemp plant, which is a cousin of marijuana. Now, before you begin to think that taking CBD oil makes you “high,” it actually doesn’t. CBD oils typically contain less than 3% THC or tetrahydrocannabinol. THC is the one responsible for giving you that feeling of being “high” when you smoke marijuana, and CBD oils don’t usually contain enough THC to alter your mind in any way. And because it contains less than 3% THC, CBD oil is legal in all 50 states under federal law.
CBD Oil and Anxiety
Okay, so let’s start our talk on CBD oil and anxiety. There are a lot of studies that involve CBD and its effects on anxiety and pain, as well as other mental health issues and medical conditions. But for the sake of this article, let’s focus on anxiety only.
Here’s what the science says: A small 2010 study found that CBD could reduce the symptoms of social anxiety in people who suffer from SAD, or social anxiety disorder. Brain scans of the subjects in the study revealed changes in blood flow to the brain region that’s linked to anxiety upon taking CBD.
In another study, which took place in 2015, researchers found CBD as a promising treatment for a number of different types of anxiety, such as SAD, panic disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety, and even PTSD.
How CBD Oil Works for Anxiety
Researchers found that CBD activates a receptor in the brain. To treat depression, some doctors prescribe patients with a dose of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that is responsible for feelings of happiness. Well, a subtype of serotonin is the 5-HT1a receptor. This is about to get science-y — but don’t worry as it’s actually very simple.
Going back, researchers found that CBD activates the 5-HT1a receptor. And when this receptor is activated, the following occurs: pro-social effects, reduced aggression, reduced impulsivity, analgesic (painkilling) effects, and anxiolytic effects (reduced anxiety). In short, CBD can be useful not only in treating anxiety and pain, but in improving your mood and disposition, too.
My Personal Experience
Okay, now let’s talk about my personal experience. I first did some research two months ago to look for promising products to try. During my search, I stumbled upon CBDistillery oil reviews and the feedback seemed promising, so I decided to try the brand’s tinctures to help with my anxiety.
CBDistillery is one of the brands on the market that offer a wide range of products such as CBD oils, gummies, capsules, and salves. One of the things I like the most about the brand is that it’s affordable. In fact, that’s perhaps the biggest reason why I chose to use a CBDistillery oil in my first foray into the world of CBD oils. If it doesn’t work as well as I expected, then at least it’s not exorbitantly priced, I thought.
What I did was I placed a few drops of CBD oil under my tongue and let it sit there for 15 to 30 minutes. This is important! Don’t swallow it right away because doing so will send the oils directly to your stomach where your digestive acids will just destroy most of the cannabidiol content. When you let CBD oil sit under your tongue for several minutes, all the good stuff goes to your bloodstream so it takes effect faster.
I used CBDistillery’s Tincture in the 500mg variant. They’re naturally formulated, unlike other brands that use artificial CBD. The first time I tried it, I immediately felt calmer and more relaxed. The effects lasted for about a couple of hours. I took it once a day and after about a week, I could feel a huge difference in the quality of my sleep. I didn’t wake up in the middle of the night as much, and I was able to fall asleep much faster. My anxiety didn’t completely disappear the first few days but after a week of regular use, I immediately felt an improvement in my anxiety levels.
I’m only in my third week of using it so I can’t really say for sure if my anxiety will disappear completely. But I will say that the CBD tincture significantly improved my mood and reduced my anxiety episodes.
There are a lot more CBDisillery products to try if you’re looking for CBD oils for pain and anxiety. I enjoy the effects of their oils and I’m looking forward to trying out their gummies next.
The Bottom Line
CBD Oil works for anxiety, according to my experience. The effects may be different for different people but CBDistillery’s Tincture definitely worked for me. If you’d like to give it a try, CBDistillery’s products are affordable while also having great quality so it’s a great brand to start with. If you’ve tried meditation, yoga, therapy, and other means to reduce your anxiety symptoms to no avail, then CBD oil might just do wonders for you.
