New international comedy season at mac

Produced by comedian turned Teletubbie John Simmit, Upfront Comedy “the most enterprising black comedy promoters in the country” (The Guardian) kick off their debut international comedy season at mac birmingham on Sunday 8 May.

Birmingham-born comedian Simmit, best known for playing Dipsy in 300+ episodes of BBC TV’s international phenomenon Teletubbies, has produced comedy shows nationwide for 20 years, including London’s West End, and internationally in New York and North Carolina. John has a previous history with mac as he trained in their marketing department before he became a comedian.

“It’s a strange oversight, considering Upfront has produced shows for over 20 years in all Birmingham’s major theatres. I’m really happy to add mac to the list, and excited by the debut international season, even after so many years of producing. Kicking off at new venues give us veteran producers new enthusiasm”

The first line-up features ‘comedy’s don’ Curtis Walker, familiar to TV viewers from many TV appearances including Top Boy, Youngers, the film Bullet Boy and many more; “he’s a phenomenal stand up, and I don’t say that casually” said Simmit, whose other TV appearances include The Gadget Show and The Big Fat Quiz.

New York comedian Sinck is flying in from Brooklyn especially to add an international flavour to the debut bill. He’ll be known to UK TV audiences from Comedy Central’s The World Stands Up. “He’s not even headlining, but bringing him in is a sign of how much we’re putting into the new mac season”.

Chirpy Londoner Melanie Gayle completes the May 8th bill, with future shows including 3 Non Blondes star Ninia Benjamin, Ireland’s John Ryan, USA’s Wil E, and award winning Brixton bus driver turned theatre filler Slim.

Upfront Comedy shows will be performed throughout the summer at mac, with additional shows on 4 June in mac’s theatre and on 20 August, the fun will be hosted in mac’s outdoor auditorium. Audiences will enjoy music, jerk and laughs from headline acts including, Judi Love and Jamie Howard.
