Nicholson’s Pub Collection reopens The Old Contemptibles following a major refurbishment

Nicholson’s Pubs Collections is proud to announce the reopening of The Old Contemptibles, an iconic Birmingham city Centre pub located in the Colmore business district, next to Snow Hill station, following an extensive refurbishment.

The Old Contemptibles was named in honour of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF), who served in the early days of WW1. The name comes from Kaiser Wilhelm II, who reportedly referred to the BEF as “That contemptible little army.” The soldiers embraced the term, and The Old Contemptibles Association was later formed to commemorate them. The pub itself was originally the Adelphi Wine Vaults in the late 18th century, then became the Albion Hotel in 1880. It was renamed The Old Contemptibles in 1953 by Mitchells & Butlers to honour the veterans who met there.

The Old Contemptibles has undergone an amazing transformation, transforming an upstairs space not used since the mid-1980s into ‘The Expedition Room’, complete with a bar perfect for meetings, dining or functions. This room was launched in an exclusive showcase event last week and is now available for public bookings. Downstairs, the snug, lovingly known as ‘The Campaign Room’, has been redesigned to offer a warm and inviting place to meet friends. Both ‘The Expedition Room’ and ‘The Campaign Room’ are available to be booked for meetings, functions and private dining. Much-loved artwork depicting WW1 soldiers has been lovingly added to.

Inside the pub, guests can continue to enjoy everything you’d expect to find on a respectable British pub menu, including our famous pies. There’s a selection of food that’s perfectly suited to every appetite.

Along with the food menu, guests will also be greeted with an extensive drinks menu, boasting a wide selection of gin options and cask, craft beers and world lagers, including their specially brewed Nicholson’s Pale ale.

Speaking about the refurbishment, Rob Burrill, general manager, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled, we’ve breathed fresh life into the building with a stunning new upstairs space that offers something truly special- more room to relax, celebrate and enjoy everything that makes a great British pub. But more important to me is what hasn’t changed. We’ve kept the heart and soul of The Old Contemptibles intact- its history, character and charm that locals and visitors have come to love over the years.”

Following the extensive refurbishment and significant investment made at the pub, the team is so excited to pour pints and serve high-quality, delicious food to guests.
