How It Started?

Grapevine Birmingham was created in 2012 by Birmingham DJ and musician Nicholas Byng to provide an online presence for  the cooler goings on in the West Midlands.

Nick’s passion has always been in music, working as a Tape Operator with local bands Black Sabbath, The Charlatans & Pop Will Eat Itself to name but a few, at the world famous Rockfield Studios. Nick began running DJ nights around Birmingham in 2000, and making his own music, which has since been used by the likes of Fatboy Slim on his album ‘You’ve Come A Long Way Baby’, Manchester United Ball Skills DVDs and playlisted around the world from Craig Charles & Don Letts on BBC Radio to Tim Love Lee in New York. Nick still DJs (occasionally) and releases music on vinyl and digital. You can hear Nick’s DJ mixes, along with his friends on Grapevine Radio.

As early as 2007, Nick realised that many national music and press publications often overlooked Birmingham’s music scene. With this in mind, and friends running music bars such as The Yardbird and Hare & Hounds Kings Heath, Nick began writing for the BBC, creating articles such as Labour Of Love Can Break Your Heart, Height Of Fashion, Birmingham jazz scene, Birmingham dance scene & Birmingham Music Scene.

This further inspired Nick to set up Brum Beat on Myspace. With over 2000 followers, most of whom were local musicians. Nick then gained enthusiasm to set up Grapevine Birmingham as a more stable and comprehensive platform to promote the best of the city – the rest, as they say, is history!

Grapevine is run from Alpha Works in Birmingham City Centre.
