Support from KM Foundation transforms futures of young musicians in London and Birmingham

A powerful scholarship programme funded by the KM Foundation is already changing the trajectory of some of the UK’s most talented young musicians, providing life-changing opportunities that would otherwise have remained out of reach.

Twenty-five outstanding scholars, aged 15 to 20 and drawn from London and Birmingham, form a three-year programme delivered by the London Music Fund and fully funded by the KM Foundation. Over the three years, the Foundation will support a total of 75 young musicians – 60 from inner-city London and 15 from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire – all from low-income and under-represented backgrounds.

These are not ordinary students. Each has demonstrated exceptional musical ability and an unwavering commitment to excellence. With the backing of the KM Foundation, they are now receiving elite-level training, mentorship and financial support designed to propel them towards world-class careers.

The impact is immediate and profound. Scholars have already taken part in a leadership workshop led by Lincoln Abbotts, Executive Director of Strategic Development at Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, exploring the skills required to lead and collaborate in professional music settings. They have worked alongside conductor Adam Gibbs and musicians from the City of London School on a major composition project marking the 15th anniversary of the London Music Fund.

So far this year the scholars attend an intensive workshop at the Royal College of Music, led by composer and facilitator Fraser Trainer, focusing on creative collaboration and stage presence. During the visit, they will also work with George Waddell, Area Leader in Performance Science, to explore the College’s state-of-the-art performance simulator — a facility used to prepare musicians for the pressures of professional performance.

The programme continues with a skills development day at the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, offering industry insight, panel discussions and high-level networking opportunities. The Senior Scholars will also be taking part in the London Music Fund’s 15th Anniversary celebrations at Smith Square Hall on April 27th alongside Ambassadors, Graduate Ambassadors and Scholars.

Crucially, the Foundation’s support goes far beyond workshops and performance opportunities. Each scholar receives a grant to remove financial barriers that so often prevent talented young musicians from progressing — covering tuition fees, instrument maintenance, specialist equipment and travel costs to lessons and performances.

Kumar Muthalagappan, who founded the KM Foundation with his family, said the aim is simple but transformative: to ensure extraordinary talent is not limited by circumstance.

“Every one of these young individuals demonstrates a level of ability far beyond the norm,” he said. “They have been selected because experienced professionals at the London Music Fund have identified the potential for them to reach world-class standard.

“For many, this is truly life changing. These opportunities are already redirecting their futures. We are not simply funding lessons — we are investing in the next generation of leading musicians.”

Kate Kelly, Senior Programmes Manager at the London Music Fund, added: “This partnership is transformational. The KM Foundation’s commitment allows us to provide sustained support for these young people, and that continuity of opportunity makes all the difference. It gives them the confidence, access and resources to compete at the very highest level.”

The results speak for themselves. Young musicians supported by the London Music Fund have already gone on to secure scholarships at some of the world’s most prestigious conservatoires, including the Royal College of Music and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.

For the 25 scholars embarking on this first three-year journey, the message is clear: talent should define opportunity — not background. Through the decisive and generous intervention of the KM Foundation, doors are opening, ambitions are expanding and futures are being rewritten.
