Birmingham Rep announce full cast for Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Birmingham Rep have today announced the full cast for their upcoming production of Stephen Sondheim’s musical masterpiece Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Directed by The Rep’s Artistic Director Joe Murphy and designed by award-winning designer Elin Steele, the production plays on The House stage between Saturday 4 July – Sunday 9 August 2026.

As previously announced West End, Broadway and international musical theatre star Ramin Karimloo (Phantom of The OperaLes MisérablesDirty Rotten ScoundrelsThe Addams Family) will play the title role of Sweeney Todd; award-winning radical entertainer, Meow Meow (Emma Rice’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Guys and Dolls) will play the iconic part of Mrs. Lovett; and three-time Olivier Award-winning actor David Bedella (& Juliet, In The Heights, Jerry Springer: The Opera) plays Judge Turpin.

They are joined by Shem Omari James (Jesus Christ Superstar, Dreamgirls, UK tour) as Anthony Hope, Jo Stephenson (Les Misérables, world tour, The Pirate Queen, London Coliseum) as Johanna, Julius D’Silva (Educating Rita, Reading Rep, What’s New Pussy Cat?, Birmingham Rep, Bridgerton and The Crown, Netflix) as Beadle, Jack Gibson (Reverberation, Bristol Old Vic, Four Play, King’s Head Theatre) as Tobias Ragg, Florence Andrews (School of Rock, Gillian Lynne Theatre, Wicked, Victoria Apollo) as Beggar Woman, Silas Wyatt-Barke (The Prince of Egypt, Dominion Theatre, Sunny Afternoon, Harold Pinter Theatre) as Adolfo Pirelli, Emily Ivana Hawkins (Alice: Return to Wonderland, Sherman Theatre, Sweet Henry V, Birmingham Rep) as Ensemble, and Hadrian Delacey (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, UK tour, The Phantom of the Opera, His Majesty’s Theatre) as Ensemble.

First performed on Broadway in 1979, Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler‘s
12-time Tony Award-winning masterpiece is considered one of the greatest musicals ever written.

Wrongfully imprisoned for 15 years, Benjamin Barker returns to Victorian London as the mysterious barber, Sweeney Todd.

Upon finding out he’s lost everything he ever loved, Sweeney swears revenge and so begins a chilling tale of murder, macabre and Mrs Lovett’s pies!

Joining Joe Murphy (Director) and Elin Steele (Designer) on the creative team are: Dr John Rigby (Musical Supervisor and Orchestral Reduction), Rory Beaton (Lighting Designer), Kelsh Buckman-Drage (Sound Designer), Tinovimbanashe Sibanda (Movement Director), Abby Galvin CDG (Casting Director), Leo Munby (Musical Director), Christopher Mundy (Associate Conductor) and David Gallagher (Orchestral Management).
