Birmingham Rep is seeking a West Midlands based Assistant Director to join the Company for the 2026 magical Christmas show Peter Panby J M Barrie, adapted by Phil Porter.
The production opens in The House on Wednesday 18 November until Sunday 17 January 2027, and promises to be visually spectacular with performer flying and intricate puppetry brought to life by a cast of 13 actor-musicians. The Assistant Director will work closely with The Rep’s Artistic Director, Joe Murphy to create the family production which includes original music by Ruth Chan, and isdesigned by Hayley Grindle.
Speaking about the recruitment search, Murphy said:
‘The Rep is here to create popular, daring and bold work that reflects the communities we serve, and I’m looking forward to working with a West Midlands based director on this production. The successful candidate will work alongside me, the performers and our brilliant creative team to bring the fantastic tale of Peter Pan to life on The House stage.
‘This is a critical role in the creation of the show, one of the biggest productions in The Rep calendar, which will be seen by audiences from around the country. As we begin to develop this year’s Christmas show, I’m looking forward to meeting applicants and welcoming the successful candidate to the Peter Pan team.’
All applicants must have a keen interest in directing and a desire to pursue it as a career. They should have experience of working as an Assistant Director on large-scale productions. The successful person will spend time in the rehearsal room working with the actor-musicians and music team, lead the important understudy work, and be the key liaison with the creative, producing and technical teams who are bringing the production to life.
The successful candidate will be required throughout the rehearsal period which begins the week commencing 3 August 2026 until the completion of the understudy rehearsals, which are due to finish the first week in December. Applications close at Midnight on Sunday 31 May 2026.
