Frances Mistry heads to Birmingham this September, headlining The Sunflower Lounge on Sunday 13th September for a night shaped by gentle honesty, warm indie folk textures and the kind of songwriting that feels quietly transformative. She’s joined by special guests Fallen Horse and Bennie Hayfield, two acts whose atmospheric and heartfelt sounds make this one of the most beautifully curated line ups of the season.
Frances has been steadily carving out her own corner of the indie folk world, soft spoken but unmistakably assured. With her third EP landing earlier this year, she’s stepped into a period of new music, new stories and deeper connection with her audience, often sharing reflections on her life, her experiences and her journey with autism. Inspired by Clairo, Faye Webster and Beabadoobee, her songs feel like small, intimate snapshots wrapped in melody, familiar in feeling yet distinctly her own.
Her rise has been quietly impressive: praised by BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders as a “proper, authentic artist”, spotlighted as Spotify’s Fresh Finds Artist of the Month, and welcomed onto the BBC Introducing stage at The Great Escape 2025. Add in support slots for Paris Paloma and Alfie Templeman, and it’s clear Frances is becoming one of the most compelling new voices in UK indie folk.
Joining her are Birmingham’s Fallen Horse, an alternative ensemble whose atmospheric sound bridges gritty Americana with haunting Scandi noir. Now performing as a five piece, their music leans into cinematic storytelling: brooding, textured and deeply emotive, drawing on PJ Harvey’s intensity and the intricate folk layers of Smoke Fairies and Tindersticks. Their set promises a dark, immersive escape for anyone craving something rich and transportive.
Opening the night is Bennie Hayfield, a Birmingham singer songwriter whose stripped back acoustic sound carries the weight of rock, folk, country and blues. After years fronting a rock ’n’ roll band, Bennie now leans into haunting melodies and songs of change, love and loss, drawing inspiration from Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Glen Hansard and Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska. With just an acoustic guitar and harmonica, he delivers performances rooted in sincerity, storytelling and emotional clarity.
A Sunday evening of soft spoken truth, atmospheric depth and beautifully crafted songwriting from three artists who thrive on connection and vulnerability. If you’re searching for music that feels tender, thoughtful and quietly powerful, this show is one to mark in your calendar.
