One of the most successful managers in West Bromwich Albion’s history, Gary Megson, has reflected on West Bromwich Albion’s great escape of 2000 as the day ‘everything changed’ at The Hawthorns.

The former Baggies boss is due to appear for a one-night-only event at Hockley Social Club, tonight Wednesday 28 May 28.

Sponsored by the WBA Former Players Association and Inspire Afrika, Megson will speak about his 45-year football career, having featured as a player for the likes of Howards Wilkinson and Kendall, Jack Charlton and Brian Clough.

But it is his double-promotion-winning period at The Hawthorns for which he is best known in the West Midlands.

Megson led West Brom to promotions in 2002 and 2004 – a feat achieved by no other Albion boss before or since.

He claims those successful campaigns owed so much to the club’s survival in 2000 – which was achieved on a dramatic day at The Hawthorns when his side beat Charlton Athletic 2-0, and fellow relegation candidates Walsall lost at Ipswich Town.

Albion were to reach the play-offs in the following year, before reaching the Premier League 12 months later.

Reflecting on the 25th anniversary of that survival, Megson said: “That day 25 years ago was so important to the future of West Bromwich Albion, both for the club itself and the fans, who were absolutely fantastic when we really needed them against Charlton.

“If things hadn’t gone right for us, it would have made the following season so difficult in every way – not least in terms of the players we’d have been able to recruit.

“Winning that game and staying up changed absolutely everything for West Brom, and it was to set us up for everything that followed over the next few years.

“It was a great day for all of us, and one that would shape everything that happened next at The Hawthorns.”
