Walfinch home care is offering four local Thrive Clubs, where anyone can join in seated exercise, refreshments and chat, free of charge.
“If you are looking for some accessible, free, mobility exercises, coupled with a chat and meeting new friends, come along,” says Mohamed Railey, Managing Director of Walfinch Birmingham South.
“Seated exercise, as taught by our local, qualified teachers, is good for mobility and mood, and we offer refreshments afterwards, where people get to know each other.”
“Over 70 people attend across the four clubs and regulars are forming friendships that extend outside of the club sessions. It’s good to see and it’s helping tackle social isolation, which is common in this area. Science also shows that community connection improves mental health,” says Mohamed.
Where to find your Thrive Club
The four clubs, which are already operating, are:
- 11am, Fortnightly from Tuesday September 15th at The Shires Retirement Living, Moseley, B13 9PQ
- 11am, Fortnightly from Thursday, September 17th, at The Hub on the Green, Bournville, B30 2AA
- 1.15pm, Every Wednesday (term time only), Shenley Court Hall, Selly Oak, B29 4ED
- 11am, Fortnightly from Monday September 14th, Holy Trinity Church, Barnt Green, B45 9QQ
He is also looking into starting two new Thrive Clubs, including one that focusses on arts and crafts and another that is based around music, dancing and socialising.
Mohamed says: “All our Thrive Clubs are free to attend and there’s no booking required, so you can just turn up, have fun and meet new people.”
Walfinch Birmingham South also offers home care personalised to each client. It currently has six carers and eight clients, but demand is growing as Walfinch becomes better known, so it is looking for more carers to join its team.
Local hubs for information and advice
The Thrive Club sessions also offer the chance to ask Mohamed and Walfinch Birmingham South carers about any kind of care issues or concerns, and information about issues such as Arthritis, Osteoporosis and other conditions.
Some sessions have had talks from solicitors who specialise in wills and probate, and opticians offering advice about eye care and conditions such as cataracts and glaucoma. More are set to follow.
Meanwhile Mohamed is busy networking to get to know local health, care and business professionals, including Age UK North Worcestershire, Arthritis UK, and Northfield Neighbourhood Network Scheme (NNS), which aims to offer over 50s and adults with long-term disabilities local community-based support and information.
“The scheme aims to improve people’s well-being and quality of life, and maintain their independence in their own home, so its goals coincide exactly with ours at Walfinch Birmingham South,” says Mohamed.
