From a spark to a flame – Birmingham Phoenix unveils symbolic flaming torch

With just six weeks to go until Birmingham Phoenix return to Edgbaston Stadium for The Hundred, players Usman Tariq, Davina Perrin and Jordan Thompson joined Lead Partner Skechers at the Bullring store, to light the official Birmingham Phoenix Flame.

The event marks the start of the countdown to the first double-header home match on Friday 24 July against Trent Rockets.

On Saturday 6 June, the Flame was carried from Skechers, Bullring, through Birmingham city centre, in a relay run supported by popular ROCUP running club, founded and led by Handsworth born and raised, Rudy O’Halloran.

Taking inspiration from major sporting events including the Olympics and Commonwealth Games, the new Phoenix Flame represents a shared unity with the city. Inspired by Birmingham’s industrial heritage, the torch has been entirely designed and constructed by Birmingham-based companies and creatives. Located in the city’s globally recognised Jewellery Quarter, Backface 3D Printers and creative agency, One Black Bear, have brought to life the symbolic design for the start of the new season.

Guinness World Record holders for 3D printing, the team at Backface used state-of-the-art technology to bring the traditional flame-torch into a modern design.

Made up of a high-resolution resin frame, the interior of the torch is powered by a clever combination of water mist and internal lighting, providing a safe, yet realistic ‘breathing’ illusion of a burning flame. The design features a wood-effect bat and a handle wrapped in cricket bat grip-tape. Two striking Phoenixes sit at the top, while the iconic Birmingham Phoenix crest takes centre stage.

Fans of Birmingham Phoenix will have the opportunity to win tickets to a Birmingham Phoenix home game, plus a brand-new kit, if they share a photo of themselves with the Phoenix Flame between Wednesday 20 May – Friday 3 July at the Bullring Skechers Store, tagging @birminghamphoenix on Instagram.

Phoenix all-rounder Jordan Thompson said: “The Phoenix flame is really cool. It’s great to have a massive company like Skechers as our partner and the Phoenix Flame, which I’m sure the fans will love just as much as us. It’s an amazing addition to the team, and truly represents us, what we stand for, and the spirit of the city.”

Batter Davina Perrin said: “I think it’s a good initiative, especially encouraging our fans to get involved and get that community engagement going.

“As a homegrown girl, it’s incredible to see all of the elements of the Flame that are made in Birmingham, it’s a great city full of so many cultures so it’s nice to see that be represented – I can’t wait to bring that spirit to the pitch, and proudly represent my team and city. One thing I love about the Phoenix is we’re Birmingham and we’re proud.”

Richard Parker, Managing Director, Skechers UK & Ireland added: “We’re incredibly proud to be Lead Partner of Birmingham Phoenix and to have Skechers on the front of the shirt this season. This is a great opportunity to engage the wider cricket community, support the grassroots game locally, and build awareness for the signature comfort and performance of Skechers Cricket.

“Birmingham is a city full of energy, ambition and culture — values that resonate deeply with our brand. The Phoenix Flame is a brilliant symbol of that spirit, and we can’t wait to see the whole city come together at Edgbaston this summer. It’s going to be a fantastic season.”

This season follows the landmark sale of all eight teams in The Hundred in 2025. Birmingham Phoenix is now under the operational control of Warwickshire County Cricket Club (50.4% majority stake) and Knighthead Capital Management, LLC (48.4% stake), who assumed their shareholding on 1 October 2025. England football star Jude Bellingham was announced as a minority shareholder (1.2% stake) last month.

Tickets for all four home fixtures are selling fast, starting at just £5 for children (aged 5–15) and £14 for adults.  To find out more and to book tickets to catch Birmingham Phoenix in action this summer, please visit www.thehundred.com.
