Fun for the whole family at Birmingham Rep this summer

As the school year comes to an end, Birmingham Rep are on hand to keep families entertained this summer with a whole host of family fun. From captivating, out-of-this-world stage adaptations to thrilling and immersive performance opportunities, there is something for all ages to enjoy.

One of the UK’s favourite family events, In The Night Garden Livecomes to Birmingham for a fun-filled live show that will have all the young ones shouting pip-pip, onk-onk from Wed 2 – Sat 6 Aug.

See all the beloved characters from the smash-hit show beautifully brought to life with full-size costumes, magical puppets, and enchanting music that is the perfect introduction to theatre for children of all ages.

Then, the award-winning children’s book, The Koala Who Could, comes magically to life in a sensational stage adaptation on Thu 7 & Fri 8 Aug.

Join Kevin, King of the staying-still-kings, and his friends Kangaroo and Wombat as they learn that “life can be great when you try something new” in this colourful and empowering adventure-filled show. This chuckle-out-loud story about embracing change is jam-packed with joyful music and enchanting puppets, suitable for ages 3+.

Another best-selling book goes from page to stage; the imaginative and action-filled stage adaptation of Lenny Henry’s hilarious children’s book, The Boy With Wings, will be taking audiences on an inter-stellar quest to save the galaxy in The Rep’s must-see co-production with Polka Theatre from Thu 21 – Sat 30 Aug.

There’s a new super-hero in town when 12-year-old Tunde sprouts giant wings and discovers his dad is a powerful alien warrior who needs his help!

Get ready for a high-flying quest as Tunde, along with his new friends including a fur-ocious feline from the planet Furlean, and a chorus of rap-battling birds, come together to save the world in this galactic space adventure, with the powerful message about what makes us different can actually be our superpower.

The Rep will be opening their doors and raising the stage curtain to give families a thrilling backstage look at exactly what goes on behind-the-scenes in their Family Backstage Tours on Fri 15 & Fri 22 Aug.

This is the perfect treat to introduce children to theatre, get involved in fun activities and explore the amazing venue. Get up close to the action and see exactly what goes in to bringing a production to life as visitors experience the magic of a working, producing-house theatre.

From backstage tours to the chance of performing – budding young actors will not want to miss the chance to take part in The Rep’s Summer School opportunities.

Every Monday from 21 Jul – 18 Aug, young people aged 3-5 (and their grown-ups) can take part in magical creative opportunities with Early Years Summer Sessions. Through puppetry, music and movement, bring well known tales to life, as well as encouraging children to create their own characters and new stories, to help develop their imagination and creativity.

Calling all James Bond and Harriet The Spy wannabes – The Rep’s Spy Schoolis back for its tenth year from Mon 28 Jul – Fri 1 Aug

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is take part in a weeklong immersive theatre adventure filled with fun and practical activities, taking on the role of a spy to complete training, discover clues and uncover mysteries. Sessions available for 7-9 and 10-12 year olds.

Young people aged 14-19 who are considering acting as a career will not want to miss The Rep’s Advanced Play In A Week workshop sessions from Mon 4 – Fri 8 Aug.

These intensive sessions provide a professional rehearsal environment where participants learn new skills, techniques and develop their acting skills whilst working on a play text towards a performance.
