A major new arts and music offering at Hockley Social Club is ‘opening up’ cultural experiences for UK audiences, alongside an acclaimed food and drink offering at the centre of the newly revamped space.

The popular Birmingham nighttime destination, on the 10,000 sq ft site of a former industrial printworks in the historic manufacturing district of Hockley, will mark its fourth year with a substantial line-up of academics, artistic organisations, comedians, DJs, musicians, and speakers.

The city’s renowned Birmingham Royal Ballet (BRB) will perform to sell-out audiences at the 900-capacity venue, also home to the newly revamped sleek performance and event space, the 150-capacity Artum.

A new epicentre of Birmingham’s vibrant arts, culture, food and drinks scene

Hockley Social Club has curated a 2024 programme that will enable fans of diverse cultural experiences to access world-class arts and music at affordable prices to help address the current cost of living crisis.

Two months of events follow hot on the heels of appearances, performances and talks from talent including Carl Chinn, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham Royal Ballet Presents Black Sabbath, Jay Blades and collaborations with We Out Here Festival, as well as launches from industry initiatives including Birmingham Live Music Project and Safe Queen.

In addition to hosting debuts, live shows and exclusive sets from some of the UK’s hottest new electronic music producers, DJs, promoters, and collectives, Hockley Social Club also offers award-winning food from some of the UK’s best street food traders, including residencies from Masterchef Professionals Dan Lee (Dai Pai Dong) and acclaimed Birmingham fried chicken brand Greidys.

The complex, which includes an outdoor covered terrace, three bars, four kitchens, and a coffee shop, will also present independent lifestyle markets and NTE industry events, ensuring its place as a new epicentre of Birmingham’s vibrant arts, culture, food and drinks scene.

The Hockley Social Club community

Drawing on the experience of delivering thousands of events in Birmingham and across the Midlands over 12 years via the acclaimed Digbeth Dining Club brand, the major venue employs 80 staff across its operation.

Jack Brabant, Director of Hockley Social Club, said: “After a refurb of the venue across every room in January, we’re feeling better prepared this year than ever before.

“Whether it’s our partnership with the Birmingham Royal Ballet, monthly comedy nights, jazz, live music two nights a week or talks by Aston University – our programme of events has pulled together some of the biggest and most respected brands in the city together to create something really special.

“We want to be able to welcome anyone and everyone whatever day they arrive at Hockley Social Club, and with three fully operational spaces, we’re able to offer much more year. And we haven’t even mentioned the food yet!

“Right at the heart of our events programme too, is affordability. People can come and watch first-class ballet for just £15, some of the best comedians in the country for under a tenner and our nights with the likes of Professor Carl Chinn and Chris Woakes were just priced at £10. It keeps everything accessible and opens up our audience to create a sense of community in the space. We’re really excited for what 2024 holds.”

A game-changing approach

Hockley Social Club now employs around 100 professionals across its operation, as part of its commitment to ensuring further employment, job security, and skills development across the city’s arts, culture, food, hospitality, music and night time economies.

Underpinning the business’s commitment to its home city, a non-profit arm utilising the expertise and skills of the team behind Hockley Social Club, Digbeth Dining Club CIC, undertakes cooking workshops, provides hot food for vulnerable people, delivers education and training, and presents community fun days across Birmingham and the Midlands.

Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association, said: “Birmingham has always offered a healthy and encouraging environment for innovative NTE businesses to emerge and thrive in what can often be a challenging market.

“The Hockley Social Club team have worked hard to deliver a world-class programme to complement their now nationally recognised food and drink offering.

“Their 2024 model represents a game-changing approach which will drive growth and employment for the city’s night-time community, alongside delivering cutting-edge and affordable night-time experiences for audiences from many different backgrounds.”
