MAC Summer 2023

Make long-lasting memories with MAC this summer – from exciting outdoor performances to one-of-a-kind interactive cinema screenings, fabulous creative courses and much more – this summer MAC’s programme has something for everyone.

Courses

Join us on Tue 1 August and become an astronaut of art… Make your own space rocket from a plastic drinks bottle and launch it into space with our day course Bottle Rockets!

If you’ve ever wanted to be a DJ – look no further! MAC Presents: DJ School – from Tue 8 – Wed 9 August. Children can learn all about basic DJ equipment, mixing techniques, syncing and beat matching and how to seamlessly mix from one tune to another.

For digital tech lovers, join us for Create a Digital Meditation Animation. On Thu 17 August, young people can learn how to create a moving meditative digital animation.

Performances

Join us for some exciting, acrobatic, family fun with Splash Test Dummies. From Sat 29 – Sun 30 July, The Dummies are off on an exciting adventure of oceanic proportions! With a brilliant array of catch-your-breath stunt work, dazzling acrobatics, dexterous juggling and side-splitting, slapstick comedy, the Dummies are ready to roll out their beach towels and spring into an exciting hour of circus-filled hilarity for the whole family.

On Tue 8 August, we’ll be joined by well-known pianist Ryota Kikuchi for a Free Live Piano Concert. Ryota currently provides music for TV programmes, anime, games and much more.

Hit West End Show Horrible Histories is back to take over MAC’s marvellous Outdoor Theatre this summer with Barmy Britain. Join us on Sat 12 – Sun 13 August.

Autin Dance Theatre will be joining us for a free, all-ages workshop – Parade: The Giant Wheel on Sat 2 September. Parade is a moving performance inspired by the beauty, power and impact of people from different walks of life coming together.

Cinema

Family favourite Colour Box returns to MAC on Sat 5 August for a one-of-a-kind drop-in creative workshop before a screening of Babe; the story of a very famous, heroic pig who causes mischief on an Australian farm, but ultimately saves the day.

Exhibitions

MAC presents brand new free exhibition Digital Zines – an exhibition of work created by seven Birmingham secondary schools during summer 2023 as part of Reframe, a new digital skills project sponsored by Apple. Showcasing until Sun 7 January 2024.

Investigate the art of nature this summer with Karl Blossfeldt: Art Forms in Nature. This exhibition presents an opportunity to witness an exemplary set of Blossfedt’s signature close-up images of plants and flora, until Sun 20 August 2023.
