The Canadian sitcom Schitt’s Creek first aired on our screens in December 2016 and provided great entertainment and heartwarming moments for fans around the world until 2020 when it sadly ended and all members of the Rose family found their happy ending.
The season begins with the Rose family losing their entire fortune and having to move to a town with the funny name of Schitt’s Creek. There they settle into the only motel in town and, although it takes them a little while to settle in, they eventually find jobs, even start a business and slowly become friends with the locals.
It’s the community spirit of Schitt’s Creek that keeps everyone from falling apart when they’re devastated. And although this is a comedy, it has some touching and beautiful moments that show what it can mean to live in a close-knit community.
The Christmas episode
One of the best moments in this series is definitely the one that takes place at Christmas (series 4, episode 13). Johnny wants to celebrate the holidays the way they used to, when they still had plenty of money and a mansion. So he plans a last-minute party, but his family’s plans and the fact that they don’t want to celebrate in a hotel make the party fall through.
Annoyed, Johnny goes into town accompanied by his wife Moira to at least have a nice meal. Afterwards, they both go back to the motel. But in the meantime, unbeknownst to him, his family has organized a wonderful Christmas party at the motel reception. So they throw a party with a Christmas tree, food and drinks.
The Jazzagals night
Jazzagals is the name of the town’s singing group. Although many fans have wondered how the small town can produce so many good singers, there’s no denying that they are one of the best pillars of the town’s community and just the place for Moira to relax and socialize.
One of her most iconic moments is the episode “Rock On!” in season five, in which the Jazzagals plan to go to a Poison concert at a nearby casino. This episode (series 2, episode 13) is one of the first moments where we find out how the Roses can integrate a little more into the life of Schitt’s Creek. Johnny and Moira make their way to a restaurant in a nearby town for their wedding anniversary. There they meet some of their uber-rich friends from their former lives. They join them, but soon after, Roland and Jocelyn (the town’s mayor and his wife, who become friends of the Roses) stop by.
Eventually everyone comes to the table, but it’s clear that the Rose’s ex-boyfriends are incredibly snobby. As they pass through Schitt’s Creek, they call it “Schittsville,” emphasizing, “It fits the name!” Johnny ends up defending the town and its residents, noting that they themselves have been welcomed with open arms, even though their former friends all turned their backs on them when they lost their fortunes. It is a pivotal moment that marks a change in the family’s life as they are no longer recognized as outsiders but as part of the community.
Schitt’s Creek is a comedy and definitely has its fair share of heartwarming moments. The characters grow up and develop over time. This is how a formerly wealthy family becomes an integral part of this town’s community.
The wedding of David and Patrick
In the very last episode of Schitt’s Creek ever aired, there’s plenty of emotion mixed in to melt anyone’s heart. David Rose and his fiancé Patrick are about to get married, but severe storms mean that none of the caterers they originally ordered can deliver on time. This is where the community of the town comes into play once again, and you realize once more why good connections are always useful; all together they manage to prepare everything within one day, from a venue to the necessary supporting program.
So nothing stands in the way of the wedding. Incidentally, the relationship between David and Patrick is one of the most beautiful themes to emerge from Schitt’s Creek and fans around the world were overjoyed when the two finally tied the knot.
Finding David
In this episode, the Rose family is looking everywhere for David because he left the town at the end of the first season. It’s a big deal in the show because we usually see the Rose family caring mostly about themselves, but here they are really worried about David.
Johnny and Alexis, David’s dad and sister, go out to find him. They find him living with an Amish family, which is pretty funny because David is not used to living without things like phones and internet. But the best part of this episode is seeing how much Johnny and Alexis care about David. They talk to him and make him feel better, and they all go back home together.
This episode is important because it shows that the Roses really do love each other, even if they don’t always show it. It also starts to show how the family is changing, becoming nicer and more caring. In this episode, Alexis, who is part of the Rose family, finishes high school. This is a big deal because she’s older than most high school students, but she worked hard to graduate. Her family, especially her brother David, wants to make her graduation night special. David plans a surprise party for her, which shows how much he cares.
