With Mother’s Day approaching, I was invited to experience Piccolino’s Sunday Roast, a celebration of family, togetherness and true Italian hospitality.
At the heart of Italian culture is la famiglia, gathering around the table, sharing generous dishes, passing plates, pouring wine, and making time for one another. Piccolino captures that spirit beautifully, creating a warm and welcoming space where families and friends can slow down and celebrate together.
The Piccolino Sunday Roast serves up herb-roasted chicken, roast beef rump, a vegan nut roast, or slow-roasted pork belly, each served with all the classic trimmings: golden roast potatoes, maple-glazed carrots, braised red cabbage, seasonal greens, rich gravy and perfectly risen Yorkshire puddings. For a truly communal experience, the Sunday Sharing Feast is designed to be enjoyed the Italian way, served to the table for everyone to share. Featuring beef, chicken and porchetta alongside all the trimmings, it’s generous, abundant and made for long, relaxed afternoons spent in good company. Add expertly paired Italian wines, and it becomes a real celebration of food, family and community.
Upon entering Piccolino, you are instantly greeted with a modern, stylish interior adorned with floral displays and lavish seating.
As myself and guest pondered over the menu we both couldn’t help but notice how gorgeous the views out into Oozells Square were, complete with Japanese Cherry Blossom and the backdrop of the Icon Gallery set within a stunning Victorian school building.
However, we were here for the food, so, after a bit of poring over the menus, our orders were placed and we relaxed with our drinks whilst enjoying the chilled music drifting through the busy restaurant.
I opted for the Porchetta – Slow roasted pork belly, rosemary, garlic & sage Roast Potatoes, Maple Glazed Carrots, Braised Red Cabbage Seasonal Greens, Roasting Gravy and Yorkshire Pudding.
If there is one thing you need to get right for a Sunday Roast, it has to be the roast potatoes and these were delicious. Crispy crunchy garlicy on the outside, and a soft fluffy texture within. The veg was al dente and tasted fresh. You certainly get your money’s worth with the Yorkshire pudding – IT’S HUGE!
Obviously the star of the show here was the pork belly, and it really is a hearty portion full of flavour and quite filling, not chewy, just right! I’d rate this a 9/10 and something I would order again. My one complaint… whilst the gravy was rich and salty, there just was no where near enough, I had to order an additional jug (which is doll’s size) and even this was enough. I would definitely recommend Piccolino upgrading to a full jug of gravy to cover what is actually a decent sized plate of veg and meat.
Overall I would rate this, you’re paying a little extra for stunning stylish surroundings, but the roast is there with some of the best in the city centre! If they get the gravy volume right… Bellissimo!!!
