September at GULP food, art, wine, and conversation in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter

September is full of energy here at GULP in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter! We’re opening our doors for a series of unique events that celebrate food, art, community, and conversation.

Safe spaces, artist-led dinners, and unforgettable wine experiences – all brought together in GULP’s 10-seat candlelit dining room.

On 24th we are super excited to launch Art Will Eat Itself with artist Mau Samayoa – where art and food come together with a studio visit and supper club. On 27th we are delighted to host ‘1485 Wines presents Terre Di Serrapetrona‘. A rare opportunity to try unique wines from the Vernaccia Nera grape. Accompanied by food, this experience is a must for food and wine lovers.

I hope there’s something here to whet your appetite.

Come Curious. Come Hungry.

Launching GULP’s brand-new Art Will Eat Itself series, visual artist Mau Samayoa invites just 10 guests to step inside his studio for drinks and canapés, before moving to GULP for a specially curated Salvadorian vegetarian dinner.

Prepared by Mau and sensory artist Kaye Winwood, this one-night-only supper club explores the intersections of food, culture, and memory. Expect delicious sharing plates inspired by Mau’s gastronomic heritage and an evening where the visual, the sensory, and the edible collide. Menu to be announced.

This series is part of GULP’s creative programme exploring the relationship between art and food – where the visual, sensory, and edible collide.

Join us for an evening with 1485 Wines, who will be showcasing bottles from the remarkable Italian winery Terre di Serrapetrona – a producer unlike any other.

For one night only, 1485 Wines and GULP present an intimate Italian wine and food pairing supper club.

Wine expert Peter Bridgwater will guide guests through an exclusive tasting from Terre di Serrapetrona – an award-winning, family-run vineyard in Italy’s Marche region. This remarkable producer is famed for its heroic viticulture and the rare Vernaccia Nera grape.

Guests can expect a journey from a dry white Pecorino blend, sparkling rose, vibrant reds including a complex aged vintage, finishing with an extraordinary and unique triple-fermented sparkling dolce red wine

Whilst Peter introduces stories of terroir, tradition, and craftsmanship behind these rare bottles, in GULP’s kitchen we will be creating some specially prepared pairing plates.

Served in GULP’s candlelit dining room around a shared table, this event is as much about connection and conversation as it is about exceptional wine and food.

About Mau Samayoa

Born in El Salvador and now based in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, Mau’s work explores the intricate relationship between memory and information—how personal experiences can be processed and transcribed into visual forms. Using a meticulous, almost surgical approach with scalpels and tweezers, he transforms memories into abstract bitmaps reflecting themes of cultural identity, time, and the repetitive nature of disciplinary actions and physical punishment.

His surfaces—beautiful yet intense—are marked by tiny incisions and folds, resonating with ideas of repetition, endurance, and performance. To my food-obsessed mind, they echo the acts of cooking and eating: the slicing and chopping of ingredients, the repetitive gestures of fine dining prep, the sensory triggers of memory, and the physical act of consumption.
