Sweet sounds to help raise right notes for Birmingham military charity

A Birmingham charity is set to benefit from a Musical Afternoon Tea event in neighbouring south Warwickshire thanks to a local Rotary Club.

Rugby Rotarians are hoping to raise the right notes for charity by joining with local musicians for the special event, on March 29th.

It will feature musical entertainment with a foodie theme served up by Rugby Operatic and Musical Society. (ROAMS)

Organised in conjunction with The Rotary Club of Rugby and Rugby Masonic Lodge, proceeds from the afternoon will support Fisher House, which provides a sanctuary for the families of military patients receiving treatment at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Fisher Houses, which are located at military and VA medical centres around the world, have up to 20 suites with private bedrooms and bathrooms and families share a common kitchen, laundry, dining room and living room.

The Foundation also operate the Hero Miles program, using donated flyer miles to bring family member to the bedside of injured service members as well as the Hotels For Heroes program using donated hotel points to allow family members to stay near medical centres without charge. It also manages a grant program that supports other charities and scholarship funds for military children, spouses and children of fallen and disabled veterans.

The Chairman of ROAMS and Mason, Stuart Esworthy, said: “Laurence Sheriff Lodge in Rugby is proud to support Fisher House, the ‘home away from home for military patients and their families.’ Fisher House is the centre of excellence for military medicine in the United Kingdom so families do not have to travel hundreds of miles to be with their loved one but can be with them in their hour of need.

“We are pleased to partner an Afternoon Tea with Rotary and the Rugby Operatic and Musical Society in support of this and other worthy causes.”

The proceeds will be also benefit other Rotary-supported charities including Shelterbox, women’s refuge and refugee children.

Rotarian and ROAMS member Tricia Davis said: “In order to support the Districts Food Themed project in March we were looking for a fundraising event as well as our community service event. I am a longtime member of ROAMS so when the chairman asked me when the society could do a concert for Rotary it seemed ideal to combine the two ideas of food and music. The Masonic charity is a wonderful example of service for people which is what Rotary is all about.”

There will also be the chance to win one of three luxury food and drink hampers at the Musical Afternoon Tea, which takes place at Arnold House, in Elsee Road, Rugby, from 2-5pm. Tickets cost £25 and are available by contacting Tricia on: 07949 155302.
