Why community has been crucial for one Digbeth based business

Kevin Fitzpatrick, owner of We Fix Macs decided to start his own business just over 3 years ago when, like many others, after the birth of his child, he found that family life meant that he needed a more flexible working arrangement. So, after many years of employment and teaching Kevin decided to go self employed and start an electronic repairs business.

Kevin initially started the business in a retail space with around 4 customers a day but after a year of business he made the unlikely decision to move away from a retail unit and into a Digbeth office space where he has found growth organically through the local community.

Digbeth has a rich and diverse heritage, a once forgotten about and neglected industrial area has been transformed into a creative community who love and appreciate the area and its distinctive character and are supportive of businesses in the area “Everything has been completely organic since I have been here” says Kevin who moved into independent office space Zellig (formally the original home to Bird’s Custard Factory) “I average 30 customers a day since I moved to Zellig, before that I was averaging 4. Moving here has been pivotal for my business, it’s a fantastic network of people here and all of my jobs are from word of mouth, I also offer a discount for anyone who lives and works in the area”.

Of course it’s not just Kevin’s business that has grown, Digbeth has entered a renaissance thanks to a series of investments into the area through infrastructure, homes, and public spaces that is seeing new businesses flocking to the area, from activity bars and spaces to eateries, live music venue, independent retail spaces and much more. The Digbeth community has always been rooted in trade, industry and craft and it’s fantastic to see this still being celebrated today through independent businesses like Kevin’s.
