One of Birmingham’s most celebrated Indian restaurants is set for an exciting new chapter, as the team behind the award-winning independent restaurant group My Delhi takes ownership of Itihaas, ensuring the future of the much-loved city restaurant.
Three months after announcing his search for the right successor, founder Raj Rana has confirmed that My Delhi will lead Itihaas into its next era, safeguarding the restaurant’s legacy, retaining its first-class reputation while investing in its future.
Guests can continue to expect the Itihaas they know and love, but behind the scenes the next chapter has already begun. The new ownership team is already making improvements across the restaurant, with further investment and a broader vision for the future to be announced later this year.
The acquisition, completed on 22 July 2026, marks My Delhi’s first venture into Birmingham and the group’s first acquisition. While ownership has changed, diners can be reassured that Itihaas will continue to trade under its iconic name, with its heritage, reputation and warm hospitality remaining firmly at the heart of the restaurant.
Founded in Newcastle in 2019, My Delhi has grown from a single restaurant into one of the UK’s most exciting independent Indian restaurant groups, with successful venues in Newcastle, Sunderland and Leicester, and Leeds set to open soon. Inspired by the vibrant culture and flavours of India’s capital city, My Delhi has become renowned for its bold regional dishes, immersive dining experiences and modern take on Indian hospitality, earning national recognition from the BBC along the way.
The new ownership team includes My Delhi founders Elahi Amin, Executive Chef Gaurav Dayal, Shah Amin, Gaurav Goyal and Neha Goyal. For Birmingham residents Gaurav and Neha, bringing My Delhi to their home city through the acquisition of Itihaas is especially meaningful.
While the restaurant will continue to operate as Itihaas, all staff members have retained their jobs and the new owners will reveal their longer-term vision for the business later this year.
Raj Rana, who founded Itihaas in 2004, said finding the right people to continue the restaurant’s story had always been his priority.
He says, “Itihaas has been a huge part of my life and this was never simply about finding a buyer.
“For more than twenty years we’ve built something that people genuinely care about. I wanted to find a team that would respect everything we’ve created, support our people and continue building on the reputation Itihaas has earned.
“From our very first conversations, it was clear this team shared those values. They’ve built an exceptional restaurant business, but more importantly they understand hospitality, people and what it takes to create something with lasting impact.
“I have every confidence they’ll protect what makes Itihaas so special while giving it the investment, care and leadership it deserves for many years to come.”
Speaking on behalf of the new ownership team, Elahi Amin described the acquisition as a landmark moment for My Delhi.
“We’ve admired Itihaas for many years. Restaurants with this history, reputation and connection to their city rarely become available.
