Comedy, confessions and live music: meet the women taking over The Spotted Dog every month.

Women make up more than half the population. Oddly, comedy bills do not always reflect this. The Glitter Sisters are correcting the administrative error, with jokes, live music, glitter and absolutely no attempt to speak with one united female voice.

Returning to Digbeth Friday 6 November, The Glitter Sisters bring together seven very different performers for another gloriously unpredictable night at The Spotted Dog in Digbeth to celebrate Bonfire Night, there will be indoor fireworks that will bring a sparkle to this dark autumnal night.

Twisted Sista, our spunky punk comedienne will MC a stella line-up featuring single mum, comedy obsessive and committed 1990s nostalgist Gemma Roath; soulful Birmingham singer-songwriter and musical storyteller Rai Reid; Victoria is our northern storyteller bringing mischief and a filter free perspective and it’s her first time performing with the Glitter Sisters; Phoebe Greggor is joining the gang and is an unmarried childfree woman is her 30’s and explores being and emo queer kid and mental health; Mary will be performing a string set with her Viola De Gamba, breaking away from comedy for this Glitter Sisters show; Sutti shares stories and jokes about observations on cultural differences.

Between them, the performers have, raised teenagers, crossed continents, survived the creative industries, written songs, taught classrooms and accumulated enough life experience to know where the bodies are buried. Now they are putting it onstage.

Expect stand-up, songs, stories, confessions and perspectives that do not always make it onto a conventional comedy bill. They may talk about work, motherhood, relationships, reinvention, getting older, starting again, or periods. If you particularly do not want them to talk about periods, they almost certainly will.

This is not “comedy for women”. It is comedy and music by women: funny, messy, multi-talented women with different backgrounds, different voices and very different definitions of appropriate behaviour. Men are not only welcome; they may be useful as witnesses.

Co-founded by Twisted Sista, The Glitter Sisters bring that same irreverent spirit to their purpose: giving female performers from across the West Midlands a place to experiment, develop, and be seen. The rotating line-up makes every performance different: part comedy night, part cabaret, part community gathering and part-controlled explosion.

What? The Glitter Sisters plus special guests do a show for bonfire night!
