Brumbeat DJ & Live Music Gig Guide Jan 2022

It’s a low-key start to 2022, with no covid restrictions in place, live music and DJ events in Birmingham begin a tentative start to the new year. Spotlight falls on some of the more local, steadfast Brum music nights which will be offering enough to keep you going into the spring. Check out our selection of the best music events in Brum this January below.

The Night Owl

There’s live music and DJ events at The Night Owl weekly this January with highlights being The Payback (funk night) with Steve ‘Jools’ Belgium Friday 14th Jan and Le Freak: Soul Train on Friday 28th Jan. https://www.facebook.com/thenightowlbham/events/

Hockley Social Club

January’s opening times for Hockley Social Club (and Cafe Artum) will be slightly different to normal, however, the 2022 opener weekend (7th, 8th, 9th Jan) will be a smasher, bringing some of the classic DJ residents returning to the decks such as Jock Lee, Deano Ferrino, Christy Lakeman, Squirrel and Paul Boots. All DJs will be playing in the warehouse from open till close. Hare & Hounds, Kings Heath

It’s back to normal at The Hare & Hounds in Kings Heath this Jan, with some top events such as Weird Wax Residents Party on Fri 14th Jan, with This Is TMRW bringing Lonelady (17th), Vels Trio (18th), and a This Is Tmrw live music All Dayer (29th). 1000 Trades

1000 Trades are reppin’ for the JQ this Jan with a full Birmingham Jazz line-up ft Loz Speyer’s Time Zone – Cuban Vibe Sound & Images (7th Jan), Shrews Band (14th), Larry Bartley Quartet (21st) and Jim Rattigan (28th).

Actress & Bishop

The Actress has a month of live music events with two of particular local interest being the funky soulful 4oz of Groove Sat 15th Jan and up and coming Ruth Kokumo‘s Showcase: Open jam, house band + guests on Sunday 30th. https://www.facebook.com/Actressandbishop/

It’s a difficulty start to 2022 for O2 Academy with a few big names being postponed, however the IDLES are still playing on 22nd Jan with an Official IDLES After Party with Joe Talbot (IDLES) DJ Set at The Castle & Falcon after.

Fonografo takes place every Thursday night in Jan at Deadwax, ft Vinyl 45 spinners playing groovy vintage killer sounds. Bad Girlfriend also play Dead Wax Digbeth 14th.

There’s an array of live music at The Victoria on Sat 15th and Sat 22nd. Live accoustic performers entertain at The Anchor Digbeth every Sunday. Young Empress, Human, Zak Vortex and Sebastian play The Rainbow Fri 28th. If you dig live blues, Henry’s Blueshouse takes place every Tuesday at Bull’s Head Brum and contemporary jazz fills the boozy atmosphere of The Spotted Dog Digbeth also every Tuesday.

Ada Lea, Sun June, Jessie Reid play the 16th Jan at The Sunflower Lounge. Becky Hill also plays an intimate gig at the Sunflower Lounge 28th (now sold out). Folky mellow vibes of George O’Hanlon is also worth checking out at Sunflower Lounge Jan 31st.
