BOM – Birmingham Open Media

BOM – Birmingham Open Media is a new collaborative workspace for art, technology and science.

As well as a co-working space for practitioners exploring creative technology, open studios, wetlab, fotofolia studio and cafe, there is a gallery showing specially commissioned work and new exhibitions.

BOM works with artists, critical thinkers, ethical hackers and forward thinking institutions. BOM (Birmingham Open Media) is a collaborative workspace for art, technology and science.

The building at 1 Dudley Street supports radical R&D and delivers innovative experiences for public audiences.

They are dedicated to open innovation and to the free culture movement, and are committed to art that has cultural and economic value by asking important questions about the role of future technologies.

The building opened on 14th November 2014, and includes:

A GALLERY – showing new exhibitions and specially commissioned work

CO-WORKING SPACE – for practitioners exploring creative technologies

OPEN STUDIOS – flexible production and workshop spaces

WETLAB – a laboratory for darkroom innovation and experiments with open science

FOTOFILIA STUDIO – a photography studio, run by Fotofilia

CAFE – managed by local tech & coffee entrepreneurs Urban Coffee Company

BOM’s building (previously a derelict shop close to New Street Station and the new John Lewis development) has been designed by Alessandro Columbano, Senior Lecturer at Birmingham City University and Coordinator of Co.LAB.

The building refurbishment and launch is made possible through financial support from the Conygar Investment Company PLC, Arts Council England, Biffa Award, UnLtd and DLA Piper.

BOM are proud to have Urban Coffee Company as a Cafe Partner, and Fotofilia as a Studio Partner. They are equally delighted that Birmingham City University are the Creative Enterprise Partner and working with students, academics and graduates across BCU’s New Technology Institute, Research Innovation and Enterprise, Visual Communications and Performance Media and English.
