Eastside Projects is a free, contemporary art gallery based in Digbeth, the creative heart of Birmingham.
Set up by a group of artists, curators and designers in 2008, the gallery has gone on to host an increasingly diverse array of exhibitions by established and emerging artists, including recent solo exhibitions by Bill Drummond and Grace Schwindt.
EP commission and present experimental contemporary art exhibitions, and propose ways in which art may be useful to society. The gallery questions structure that in turn produces more questions and also, of course, possible answers. Their ambition is to incorporate the methodologies of art-making at all scales and functions of the organisation.
The ethos of the gallery is to work collaboratively towards change, whilst supporting the cultural growth of Birmingham. They do not make art for the public. EP are the public that makes art. The artist run space is not a stop gap. The artist run space is a public good.
Eastside Projects is also home to a lively membership scheme called Extra Special People. Open to creative enthusiasts over the age of 18, Extra Special People, or ‘ESP’, aims to support the development of its members work, ideas, connections and careers through a programme of events, opportunities and projects.
There is also a small honesty cafe, this is a great place to simply sit and ponder or chat with some of the interesting characters who drop by.
The gallery is open to the public between 12 – 5pm, Wednesday – Saturday.
General admission is always free of charge.
