Long car trips: How to ready your car

Long trips can be a lot of fun. Just you and the open road, great music, your favourite snacks and hopefully some good company.

Before you set off you will need to prepare your car for the trip. Making sure your car is roadworthy and safe for both you and your passengers is important. Here are some things to think about before you embark on any long-distance travel.

Check your fluids

It may seem obvious but making sure you fill up on fuel the day before allows you to get away smoothly at whatever time you need to leave. Drivers with young kids will know how nice it is to just get going when there is a long trip ahead of you!

Fuel isn’t the only fluid to check. You should also make sure your windscreen wash, brake fluid and engine coolant are all at optimal levels to prevent any breakdowns or accidents when you are on the road.

Prepare your tyres

The British weather can be changeable at the best of times, so your tyres need to be in good condition to prevent skidding or blowouts. In the week before you leave, make sure you check your tyres and if you need to, get new ones fitted. The easiest way to do this is to ask for recommendations in your area, such as tyre services in Shrewsbury.

Pack for emergencies

Packing for emergencies is especially important in the colder months. You may find yourself experiencing a breakdown in a snowstorm or torrential rain. Make sure you have a blanket, warm clothes for all passengers, some food and water, torches and an emergency kit.

Your emergency kit should consist of things like some de-icer and a scraper, a high-vis jacket and some jumpstart cables. You may also want to pack a spare fuel can in case you run out and have to walk to find some.

Plan your route

Planning your route allows you to have an idea of where your rest stops are going to be. This enables you to plan for petrol refuels, meaning you are less likely to be caught short.

Breaks from driving are also useful for getting out and stretching. Feeling drowsy behind the wheel can have some horrendous consequences so taking breaks and getting some fresh air is a good way of preventing this. It is also useful for kids and pets to have a run-around, making for a less stressful leg of the journey.

Book in with professionals

If there is anything car-related that you are not confident with, then it is time to call in the professionals. Garages can get booked up quickly, especially around the summer months so it is important to book in advance of your trip.

This will give you the peace of mind that your car is safe and able to complete a long journey.
