A sweeping night of cinematic synth pop, brooding darkwave, and widescreen electronic songwriting arrives at The Victoria on Thursday, 4th June, as Magnetic Skies headline with special guest Matt Harper.
Formed by Simon Kent and Jo Womar, Magnetic Skies began as a studio based experiment rooted in their shared love of 80s synth driven post punk and electronic pop. What started as a creative partnership soon evolved into a full band with the addition of drummer Lenin Alegria, allowing their atmospheric recordings to expand into a powerful, immersive live show.
Their early EPs in 2020 introduced a sound built on pulsing analogue synths, emotive vocals and a cinematic sense of scale, a blend that feels nostalgic without ever being retro. Their 2023 debut album ‘Empire Falling’ marked a major step forward, earning praise across the alternative press and leading to support slots with Altered Images, Heaven 17, Empathy Test and Then Jerico.
The band’s second album, ‘Fragments’, released in November 2025, pushed their sound even further. With production from Simon Kent and Rob Aubrey, the record pairs sweeping analogue soundscapes with anthemic choruses and lyrical themes exploring identity, connection, and the dislocation of modern life. It’s a bold, emotionally resonant body of work that has cemented Magnetic Skies as one of the UK’s most compelling electronic acts.
Known for atmospheric, high impact live performances, the band returns to the road this summer for a run of intimate UK dates, bringing the expansive world of ‘Fragments’ to Birmingham.
Birmingham’s Matt Harper opens the night with his melodic, cinematic brand of electronic pop. Drawing from synthpop, new wave, and indie rock, Matt’s music is rich with shimmering textures and memorable hooks.
Since debuting with ‘Everyone’ in 2021, he has built a global following through his self produced album ‘New Sounds’, a series of bold remix projects with Geomagnetic and Ryan Davies, and the rock leaning 2024 EP ‘Change the World’. His breakout single ‘Oh No’ earned international acclaim and widespread radio play, marking him as one of the region’s most exciting electronic voices.
A Thursday night filled with lush synth atmospheres, darkwave depth, and emotionally charged songwriting, perfect for fans of electronic music that balances nostalgia with a modern, cinematic edge.
