REDEFINING CRAFT & BRUTALISM: EMERGING FIBRE ARTIST ODETTE CAMPBELL PREMIERES SOLO EXHIBITION AT SEVENTH CIRCLE
Following her winning submission for Seventh Circle’s open-call exhibition Renaissance earlier this year, Campbell was awarded a solo showcase to present a stunning body of work that sits at the intersection of textiles, architecture, and political craft.
Drawing inspiration from Bridget Riley, Black Country Type, and Anni Albers, Under Construction reimagines the historical language of Bargello needlepoint through the lens of West Midlands architecture. Geometric, wave-like stitches reinterpret the heavy lines, Brutalist structures, and industrial weight of Birmingham and the Black Country, softening and warming concrete forms through thread and colour.
Key themes of the exhibition include:
Reclaiming embroidery from traditional domestic classification and repositioning it as a dynamic, architectural, and spatial fine art practice.
A pivotal shift in Campbell’s methodology where dropped stitches, exposed canvas, and loosened precision reflect a dialogue between growth, decay, and transformation.
Visual dialogue bridging contemporary urban landscapes with historical textile references from Parham House.
“A city is never finished, and neither is a practice or a person,” says artist Odette. “Under Construction reflects a step change, a conversation between structure and softness, labour and memory.”
