BAM UK & Ireland is helping to transform education facilities for around 4,000 pupils across the Midlands, delivering three major school redevelopment projects that will create modern, sustainable places to learn.

Working with the Department for Education (DfE) through its School Rebuilding Programme, BAM is delivering new and improved facilities at Perryfields Academy in the West Midlands, Friesland School in Derbyshire and The Royal School Wolverhampton.

Together, the projects represent a significant investment in the region’s education infrastructure, replacing ageing buildings with sustainable, energy-efficient facilities, designed to support future generations of pupils and local communities.

The three schemes span primary, secondary, sixth-form and boarding education, with improved classrooms, specialist teaching spaces, sports facilities and outdoor learning environments.

Transforming Perryfields Academy

At Perryfields Academy in Birmingham BAM is delivering a major redevelopment that will provide modern facilities for 1,200 pupils and 120 staff.

The project will see six existing school buildings demolished and replaced with a new three-storey, L-shaped school, bringing together classrooms, specialist teaching areas, drama facilities, a central hall, dining space and integrated sports hall. An existing building will also be retained and refurbished, with a covered link connecting it to the new school.

A landscaped courtyard will provide outdoor learning areas, social spaces, amphitheatre seating and covered dining facilities, creating opportunities for pupils to learn and interact beyond the classroom.

Redevelopment takes shape at Friesland School

In Sandiacre, Derbyshire, BAM has reached a major construction milestone at Friesland School, completing the structural steel frame for a new £30 million school building.

The approximately 5,500m² net-zero carbon building will provide modern facilities for more than 1,300 students, replacing outdated facilities with flexible learning spaces.

Due to open for the 2027 academic year, the school will include new ICT, art and humanities classrooms, alongside a sports hall, changing facilities, kitchen, dining area and assembly hall.

The new sports hall will also be available for community use, extending the benefits of the investment beyond the school gates.

Modernising the Royal School Wolverhampton

At the Royal School Wolverhampton, BAM is delivering an extensive programme of new-build, refurbishment and extension works to improve facilities for approximately 1,510 pupils, including 60 to 80 boarding students.

The redevelopment includes a new primary school, improvements to secondary teaching facilities, extensions to the sports complex and design technology block, and refurbished boarding accommodation.

New sports pitches, improved parking and external spaces will further enhance the campus, while sensitive refurbishment of the school’s Grade II listed building will help preserve its heritage for future generations.

Mark Gibson, DfE Director at BAM UK & Ireland, comments:

“These projects represent a significant investment in education across the Midlands, creating modern, sustainable and inclusive environments for thousands of pupils, staff and local communities.

“From the fully replanned campus at Perryfields Academy to the net-zero carbon redevelopment of Friesland School and improvements at The Royal School Wolverhampton, each scheme demonstrates BAM’s commitment to delivering high-quality education buildings.

“Working with the Department for Education and our trusted partners, we are proud to help transform ageing estates into inspiring and resilient places to learn, teach and thrive.”
