Following a spectacular Opening Ceremony to mark the start of Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, the show’s star Bull is now on display after proving a hit with audiences across the globe.

The huge, armoured Bull was a central part of the Opening Ceremony. The Bull was pulled on stage by 50 women representing the female chain-makers of the Industrial Revolution who made chains used in the slave trade. The segment featured the women breaking free from their chains to symbolise release from oppression. The Ceremony’s protagonist Stella then offers friendship to the Bull highlighting our ability for compassion and togetherness.

The Bull is made from machinery from Birmingham and West Country factories. It stands at 10 metres high, is 2.5 tonnes and can emit smoke and cry tears of blood. It was designed, built, and mechanised by a team of over 50 people from a UK-based special effects company.

Members of the public can now view the Bull in Centenary Square, where the Birmingham 2022 megastore is also located. Viewers can also enjoy the cultural activity on offer at the Victoria Square Festival Site, where members of the public can view sporting action, watch artists and performers, and enjoy food and drink on offer. The Festival kicked off with a stellar programme today which included a dance fitness session and a singer-songwriter showcase. This weekend offers more festivities including sunrise stretch sessions, music acts and top sporting moments for the public to enjoy.

The Birmingham 2022 programme also features seven neighbourhood Festival Sites across city, with the first ever Relaxed Festival Site at TouchBase Pears in Selly Oak. The inclusive sports and arts programme will allow everyone to be themselves, as well as offering an opportunity to learn and try new things.
