The Night Owl

Birmingham and the West Midlands hold an association with Northern Soul which pre-dates the very term ‘Nothern Soul’, right from when local bands such as the Spencer Davis Group and early Robert Plant soul songs (way before Led Zeppelin) graced venues such as the Eagle on Hill Street in the mid 60s,they were imitating the soul sounds of America.

Soul and MOD music remained popular in Brum right up to the Soul Weekenders at the Power House nightclub. However, since this time the soul scene in Birmingham has been sporadic with little focus… Until now! The Midlands first purpose built Northern Soul & Motown Bar ‘The Night Owl’ now welcomes party goers from all over the UK.

The venue takes its name from a classic Northern Soul record ‘The Night Owl’ by Bobby Paris. Northern Soul isn’t just a type of music, it’s a way of life. The records, the dancing, the clothes, and the lifelong friends made. Richard Priest has adored Northern Soul since his teenage years in the 1970s; he became a regular at infamous all-nighter parties at legendary venues such as Wigan Casino. His dream has become a reality and now Soul fans across the UK can enjoy great knowledgeable DJs and occasional live bands at The Night Owl.

A sprung wooden dance-floor enables safe acrobatics of Northern Soul dancing. The venue also features a modern spin on the vintage interiors by Stax Creations. The DJ booth is kitted out with vinyl turntables and CDJs. At pure Northern Soul events a camera is positioned above the record decks and projects the label of the record that is playing onto the wall. The venue also benefits from the highest quality sound equipment.

While Northern Soul is still at the heart of this stunning purpose designed venue, other great nights at The Night Owl include DJs playing psychedelia, funk, disco, reggae, 80s pop and MOD from the regions finest DJs in their field. Digbeth has never had it so good! Look out for student nights and dance off parties where the audience decide who wins the best dancer of the night. There’s live music from rock to soul and a great drinks menu including specials such as a Strawberry Fields cocktail, named after the Beatles song, or the Blue Hawaiian is a vodka, blue raspberry and gin based favourite…

The Night Owl also do cocktail master classes now by the way and Jessie is an absolute wizard!
