The Night Owl

The Night Owl is The Midlands’ finest soul and retro club. An intimate live music venue set in the heart of Digbeth, the Creative Quarter of Birmingham.

Based on Lower Trinity Street in Digbeth, The Night Owl is the perfect club for any fan of music from days gone by. Taking its name from the Northern Soul song of the same name by Bobby Paris, The Night Owl was the first ever purpose built Northern Soul and Motown club, opening its doors in 2015.

Birmingham and the West Midlands holds an association with Northern Soul which pre-dates the very term ‘Northern Soul’, right from when local bands such as Spencer Davis Group and early Robert Plant soul songs (way before Led Zeppelin) graced venues such as the Eagle on Hill Street in the mid 60s, they were imitating the soul sounds of America. The Night Owl champions this, being independently ran by avid music fans and loved by many local and further afield.

Since its opening , The Night Owl has gone from strength the strength, expanding its music genres to include much loved retro genres spanning decades (as well as record collections!) Soul is and always will be at The Night Owl’s core, but music fans can expect Motown, ska, funk, disco, garage, psychedelia, rock and roll, Britpop, indie and more coming from tribute and live bands and respectful Birmingham DJs every week, both in the day and night.

A sprung wooden dance-floor enables safe acrobatics of any type of dancing, from classic Northern Soul, to kicks and flips of 1970s hip hop, and disco moves and grooves at Soul train dance offs. The venue also features a modern spin on the vintage interiors by Stax Creations and hand painted paisley murals on the walls and stage. The DJ booth is kitted out with both vinyl turntables and CDJs with the highest quality sound.

Alongside winning ‘Best Club Night’ (Birmingham Music Awards) for the aforementioned Le Freak Soul Train dance offs, The Night Owl has also won the Birmingham Mail’s Readers Choice award soon after opening as well as winning ‘Best Brum Cocktail’ in the Independent Birmingham Awards. Cocktail Masterclasses are available to book, so you can learn how to shake your drinks with soul, and the venue is available to hire for private parties and events.

There’s a fab outdoor ‘backyard’ space too, which is host to various street food events and mini Night Owl festivals, and if that wasn’t enough, The Night Owl take their DJs on take-overs around the region bringing soul to a wider audience.
